Bonaparte, Jérôme

(1784-1860)
king of Westphalia, brother of Napoléon I
Born in Ajaccio, Corsica, the son of maria letizia ramolino and carlo maria bonaparte, and the brother of napoléon i, Jérôme Bonaparte served in the French navy, and in 1803, while in the united States, married Elizabeth Patterson. Napoléon, however, arranged for a second marriage in 1807 to princess Catherine of Wùrtemburg. Jérôme Bonaparte became king of Westphalia that same year. In 1813, he went into exile but returned in 1815 to command a French division at Waterloo. After Napoléon's defeat and abdication, he went into exile again, returning to Paris in 1848, when his nephew, Louis-Napoléon (the future napoléon III), came to power. Jérôme then, in 1849, was made governor of the Invalides and, subsequently, a marshal of France (1850), and president of the Senate (1852). The present Bonaparte line and claimants are descended from him.
